Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara Announces Temporary Judge Opportunities for Attorneys

SAN JOSÉ, CA (May 14, 2025)The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara continues to rely on its Temporary Judge Program as a vital resource in some of the Court’s busiest divisions. Through this program, qualified attorneys volunteer their time and expertise to preside over small claims and traffic hearings, facilitate the settlement of civil and family law matters, and serve in other judicial capacities as assigned by Hon. Julie A. Emede, Presiding Judge.

The contributions of temporary judges are invaluable to both the people of Santa Clara County and the Court’s ability to manage its caseload efficiently. Their service ensures that justice is administered promptly and equitably throughout the county.

Currently, the Court engages temporary judges in five divisions: Civil, Family, Probate, Small Claims, and Traffic. While Small Claims and Traffic assignments typically involve on-the-record courtroom hearings, those in Civil, Family, and Probate focus more on settlement conferences and alternative dispute resolution. Attorneys serving in these divisions often have the opportunity to tailor their assignments to align with their areas of expertise or interest. All certified temporary judges are provided with court-designated parking at each facility.

The Court encourages interested attorneys to apply and participate in required training programs in compliance with the California Rules of Court. Attorneys not currently active in the Temporary Judge Program must complete the application process to be considered. The Court especially welcomes applications from attorneys of diverse backgrounds and experiences.

In support of this initiative, the Court is pleased to announce its upcoming Bench Conduct and Demeanor Training Webinar, scheduled for:

Led by Hon. Sunil Kulkarni and Hon. Lori Pegg, this interactive training session equips attorney volunteers with the foundational skills and knowledge necessary for successful temporary judicial service. It is an essential educational opportunity for both new applicants and returning temporary judges.

“We’re committed to ensuring that our volunteer attorneys are well-equipped to reflect the professionalism and impartiality expected from the bench,” said Presiding Judge Julie A. Emede. “This training exemplifies that commitment.”
