Santa Clara County Superior Court Congratulates Judge Frederick S. Chung on Appellate Court Nomination
SAN JOSÉ, California (August 13, 2026): The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, proudly congratulates Judge Frederick S. Chung on his nomination by Governor Gavin Newsom to serve as an Associate Justice of the Sixth District Court of Appeal.
Judge Chung has served the Santa Clara County community as a Superior Court judge since 2018. Before joining the bench, he was a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and an associate at Morrison & Foerster LLP. He also served as a law clerk for Judge Karen Nelson Moore of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Judge Chung earned both his undergraduate degree and Juris Doctor from Harvard University.
Throughout his service on the Santa Clara County bench, Judge Chung has demonstrated a commitment to the fair and thoughtful administration of justice. His nomination reflects the experience, legal insight, and dedication to public service that he has brought to the Court and the communities it serves. “We look forward to Judge Chung’s service to the community as an appellate justice, but we will acutely feel the loss of him from our Superior Court family. We wish him all the best,” said Presiding Judge Julie A. Emede.
The Commission on Judicial Appointments will consider Judge Chung’s nomination during a public hearing at 3 p.m. on August 19, 2026. If confirmed, he will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Adrienne Grover following the completion of her term on January 4, 2027. Judge Chung’s appointment to the term beginning that day will also be subject to voter confirmation in the November 3, 2026, general election.
