The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, Proudly Announces the Appointment of New Judge

SAN JOSÉ, CA (May 8, 2025)The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, is pleased to announce the appointment of Christopher Van Meir as a Judge in the Santa Clara County Superior Court by Governor Gavin Newsom.  A dedicated public servant with nearly two decades of legal experience, Mr. Van Meir has built his career in public defense across several California counties. He has served as a Deputy Public Defender at the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office since 2018, ensuring access to justice for all.

Prior to his service in Santa Clara County, Mr. Van Meir held positions as a Deputy Public Defender at the Monterey County Public Defender’s Office from 2013 to 2018, and at the Placer County Public Defender’s Office from 2006 to 2013. His career reflects a deep commitment to fairness, due process, and the rights of individuals navigating the criminal justice system.

Mr. Van Meir earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.  He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Jacquiline M. Arroyo.

Presiding Judge Julie A. Emede shared her thoughts on the appointment: “Christopher Van Meir brings a wealth of trial experience and a strong commitment to justice. His long-standing service as a public defender will bring a vital perspective to the court, and we are proud to welcome him to the bench.”
