Law Day 2024

SAN JOSÉ, California (April 23, 2024):  The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, in collaboration with the Santa Clara County Bar Association, proudly presents the Law Day 2024 Video Contest under the theme "Voices of Democracy." This annual event aims to engage and inspire our community's youth, ages 12 to 20, to participate actively in democracy by exploring and expressing their perspectives on fundamental questions about the democratic process.

As the United States approaches its 60th presidential election, the 2024 Law Day theme, "Voices of Democracy," highlights the crucial role of citizens in shaping the nation's governance. Through open dialogue, informed voting, and civic engagement, individuals uphold the principles of democracy and ensure that government remains responsive to the needs of the people.

"At the very heart of democracy lies the essential ability of people to determine how they are governed,” said Commissioner Johanna Thai Van Dat.  “We are committed to fostering an environment where youth are encouraged to express themselves creatively and actively participate in meaningful dialogue regarding the importance of engaging in civic discourse about the rule of law."

The contest invites participants to create original videos, each two minutes or less in duration, responding to prompts related to democracy, the Constitution, and civic participation. These prompts encourage students to delve into topics such as the power of individual voices, the mechanisms of constitutional democracy, the significance of political expression and voting, and methods for deepening understanding of the electoral process.

Entries should be submitted via email to events@scscourt.org, accompanied by the student's name, grade level, and school. Additionally, participants are encouraged to share their videos on social media platforms using the hashtag #SCLawDay2024.

Submissions are due by Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

All contest entrants will receive a certificate of participation, and the top three winners will be awarded prizes. The winning entries will be featured on the Court's public website and social media channels, showcasing the talent and creativity of Santa Clara County's youth.
